70’s Best Fashion Trend: Fashion Forward with Reinventing the Style.
Defined by fashion icons like Jane Birkin, Jackie Kennedy, Jean Shrimpton, Cher, Farrah Fawcett and more, the 1970s continues to influence the high street almost fifty years later.
Here, our Fashion Editor breaks down the top trends from the 70s, along with outfit ideas and styling tips on how to nail each and every look now. Whether you’re going to a themed party or just feel like adding a little vintage flair to your wardrobe, there’s something here for everyone.
Tweed jackets and pussy-bow blouses
Celine’s autumn/winter ’19 show practically oozed 1970s fashion, with a classic trickle-down effect noticeable in stores this season. Flirt with chic culottes, tweed blazers or skirts, pussy-bow blouses and proper (read: leather) handbags.
Boho dresses and skirts
Tip: Unsure where to start with this look? Make you splurge on statement pieces, like an aviator jacket, prairie dress or vintage-style loafers (with glitter socks, of course…)
Jeans and denim
Denim, the hardest-working fabric in your wardrobe, is synonymous with 70s fashion. Think flares, jumpsuits and trucker hats mixed with retro-looking sweaters and snakeskin.
Tip: Always try on a jumpsuit before you buy it, as some can be too long in the leg. If you need a bit of help nailing the fit, add height with western or block-heeled ankle boots.
Suits and co-ordinates
Tip: A suit is this season’s investment buy – choose velvet, denim of chunky corduroy. Jackets are boxy and oversized, finish by layering over a contrast-coloured shirt or roll-neck jumper.
