For most of us, facials aren’t a part of our regular skin-care routine because of cost, busy schedules, sensitive skin—the list goes on. But ask any celebrity aesthetician, and they will tell you facials are one of the top secrets behind Hollywood’s most beautiful complexions. Here, Joshua Ross, founder of SkinLab and celebrity aesthetician—shares his facial dos and don’ts for flawless skin all year long.

Two weeks: “If you want to get a spray tan, have it be more than two weeks prior to your facial, so your skin tone doesn’t end up irregular.”

One week: Stop exfoliating. “This will allow the aesthetician to do a more thorough exfoliation. If skin is overexfoliated, you won’t get the best results-oriented exfoliation that they might have done otherwise. It’s also a good idea to increase your sun protection one week prior.”

72 hours: “Discontinue use of all retinols, acids, actives, anti-acne and anti-aging products, as they can sensitize the skin and not allow for the treatment to be as thorough.”

48 hours: Be sure to avoid the steam room both prior to your facial and for at least 48 hours after your facial in order to reduce inflammation. “Steam increases the core temperature of the body and causes an increased amount of circulation in the blood, which can lead to inflammation. You want to avoid this pre- and post-facial because you want a controlled amount of trauma and injury to the skin, and your facial will take care of all of that. You’ll most likely be steaming in your facial anyhow, so you don’t need it!”

The day of: “If you plan to work out before a facial, have it be at least two to three hours ahead of your appointment. Workouts increase the core temperature of the body, which can make the skin more reactive to certain parts of your facial, such as the steam and extractions. Also, if you plan to get Botox injections on the same day, get them afterward because it’s recommended that you don’t lay down after receiving Botox.”

Also notes that after a facial, it’s crucial not to wash your face, or even that evening before bed, so you can allow the products to absorb. “But the next day, you can return to your regular skin-care regimen,” he says.
