“BLACK IS MODEST AND ARROGANT AT THE SAME TIME. BLACK IS LAZY AND EASY – BUT MYSTERIOUS. BUT ABOVE ALL BLACK SAYS THIS: “I DON’T BOTHER YOU – DON’T BOTHER ME.” ― YOHJI YAMAMOTO

Colors excite our minds in various ways, and how we react to some of them can tell a lot regarding our personality.

One study states that black is often seen as “serious” and “reliable,” which means confident. The survey examined around 1000 people. The authors are Buytshirtsonline — a U.K.-based whole supplier for corporations like Fruit of the Loom, Gildan and American Apparel. The aim was to investigate how clothing colors influence the way others see us. It turned out that black came out on top. Here is what the researchers say about the results:

“Black is the color to wear when you’re trying to impress, reassure or woo. There’s certain trustworthiness about it on a person that would make you hand over your life savings and thank them for the privilege. … Throughout all our survey, black came first or second in most ‘good’ traits (for example confidence, intelligence, and sexiness) and barely figured in the ‘bad’ traits (arrogance).”

Black is generally an indication of “seriousness” and “reliability,” so it stands at the top on the list of colors that both sexes find beautiful.

Why?

The answer is simple. Confidence. Almost half of the women and 64% of the men participating in the study think that black emits self-sufficiency. It is the most beautiful, bold, confidence boosting and calming color that exists.

But people who wear black are not only that. In fact, along with their confidence, through their color preferences, they manifest, a vulnerable side of their character.

Those who wear all black are also usually very sensitive, a bit unstable, and want to draw the attention of the others on who they are and what they are trying to achieve in life rather than on their appearance.

These people are unintentionally seeking to defend themselves against emotions that are too strong. They could get easily distracted or overreact. And often struggle to ward off anxiety and stay focused.

Nevertheless, what’s interesting is that people who wear all black usually don’t mind if others wear various colors. It’s not the colors themselves that are unpleasant to them when it comes to their clothing; it’s the way they put these colors on themselves. The colors represent their identity and that is what they are most concerned about.

Another theory stemming from color psychology, says that people who love black often have a desire to reclaim their power.

They achieve that through different behaviors like for example trying to “shield” from some emotions, building distance from others, or demonstrating a necessity to receive respect. All of these specifics of the character could be revealed through the love of wearing black which comes as a subconscious message to the self and others.

Here is what Johny Cash says:

“I wore black because I liked it. I still do, and wearing it still means something to me. It’s still my symbol of rebellion — against a stagnant status quo, against our hypocritical houses of God, against people whose minds are closed to others’ ideas.”

So, to sum up, a person who wears black sees themselves as an important figure. Such people think that black makes you appear more attractive, intelligent, and confident. However, they also have a weak side of the character revealing their vulnerability. People who wear all black are often determined, yet sensitive, as we’ve explained above.

Below we have also listed the five most common personality traits of people who love wearing black:

1. These people are very confident.

2. They’re also very sensitive.

3. Such people have a rebellious nature, and wouldn’t accept authority.

4. They like feeling powerful and influential.

5. These people don’t quickly get close to others; they could build walls to protect themselves.

Eventually, it would be interesting to mention that teenagers often have a psychological need to wear black during the period of transition from the childhood to the adulthood. It marks the end of one phase of their life and the beginning of another. They like it so much because it allows them to shield from the world until they have created their true individuality. It is essential they go through this stage, but this could mean there is a problem if it continues during their life as adults in case they exclude other colors.

Nonetheless, no matter how many positive and powerful qualities this color reveals about the people who prefer wearing it, too much black could lead to depression and mood swings. It could create a negative environment. So the best way to wear black is to use some color with it to lighten and brighten its energy.
